Garage Cleanout in Nampa
Delivering fresh starts since 2022
Garages in Nampa tend to collect things in layers. A few old paint cans from a repaint, a mower that stopped starting, a set of tires from a swap, boxes that migrated out of the house years ago and never made it back.
By the time someone decides to clear it out, there's usually a mix of plain junk, metal, and a few items that need special handling. Old Nampa's craftsman bungalows hold onto decades of stuff differently than a newer three-car garage out in a South Nampa subdivision, but the sorting problem is the same either way.
Where It All Ends Up
Canyon County runs its own site for this: Pickles Butte Sanitary Landfill, south of town toward Lake Lowell and Melba. It takes household and residential cleanup waste from Canyon and Owyhee county residents, plus construction debris, clean wood and green waste, both charged separately.
It also draws clear lines. Motor homes, buses, and anything street-legal and driveable aren't allowed in, even as waste. Hazardous waste, commercial used oil, and anything that looks like ammunition or explosives are refused outright, and refrigeration units only get taken once the Freon is out.
That's why a garage cleanout isn't just load-it-and-go. Tires, batteries, metal, and anything with coolant in it get separated before the rest goes into a general load.
- Old tires — accepted for a per-tire fee
- Car batteries — accepted
- Fridges, freezers, window AC units — accepted once the Freon is removed
- Push and riding mowers — go to the metal pile
- Paint, fuel, propane tanks — not accepted, these count as hazardous waste
- Travel trailers or campers — accepted only with the AC unit removed
Easy Mistakes to Avoid
Every load headed to the landfill has to be covered and secured. It's county code, not a suggestion, and an uncovered load can draw its own fee. A truck bed full of loose insulation or broken drywall needs a tarp before it ever reaches the scale.
Gas and oil left inside a mower or edger is another common snag. That needs to be drained before the mower can go to metal recycling, and the same goes for propane tanks or old fuel cans sitting in the corner. Those don't belong in a junk load at all — they need a hazardous waste drop-off, not Pickles Butte.
And if the plan is a city bulky pickup through Republic Services instead of hauling it out yourself, that has to be scheduled ahead of time. It isn't a same-day service, which makes it a poor fit for a garage you're trying to clear this weekend.
Timing It Right
Nampa runs two free cleanup weeks a year — Spring Cleanup the third full week of April, and Holiday Cleanup the first full week after Christmas. Both let households set out bulky items and non-Freon appliances at no charge, which makes either window a smart time to plan a bigger garage push if your schedule allows it.
Outside those weeks, bulky pickup and landfill drop-off both involve fees. A garage cleanout you can't wait on doesn't need the free window, though — it just means budgeting for disposal instead.
A Nampa garage cleanout really comes down to sorting things correctly before anything leaves the property: metal here, hazardous materials there, everything else covered and secured for the trip to Pickles Butte.
