Household Junk Removal in Star
Delivering fresh starts since 2022
Star is growing faster than almost anywhere else in Idaho, and that shows up in what gets hauled out of its driveways and garages. New subdivisions like Heron River, Star River Estates, Movado Estates and Skybreak have filled in along the Boise River, so household junk removal here skews young: moving leftovers, garage overflow and the normal churn of a town adding new residents every month.
That's a different job than you'd find in an older Boise neighborhood. Most Star homes went up within the last decade or so on master-planned subdivision lots, so there's less chance of a basement packed with decades of accumulation and more chance of builder debris, remodel leftovers, or a garage that just needs to be reset. Out along the river corridor, where some lots run over an acre and allow horses, the job looks different again: fencing, sheds and outbuilding cleanouts on acreage that's been there a while longer.
What Usually Needs to Go
Because so much of Star is newer construction, a lot of what we clear out isn't old family stuff, it's the byproduct of moving in and settling down. Builders and remodelers don't always haul away everything they leave behind, and new homeowners end up with more boxes, packaging and odds and ends than they expected.
On the rural-residential side, especially near the river where lots are bigger and some allow horses or a small hobby farm, the job is more likely to include an old shed, a run of fencing, or materials left from a previous owner's project. If you're planning to tear down a shed or outbuilding, check with the Star Building Department first; demolition in the city requires a permit.
Not everything needs to leave in a junk hauler's truck. Clean wood and scrap metal can usually be recycled rather than landfilled, and anything with Freon, like an old fridge or window AC unit, needs to go through proper removal rather than just getting tossed in a pile.
- Moving boxes and packing material from new construction and new move-ins
- Garage overflow: patio furniture, sports gear, bikes, overflow storage
- Remodel and renovation debris left behind after the crew wraps up
- Old appliances being swapped out, especially anything with a Freon line
- Shed, fencing or outbuilding cleanouts on larger river-corridor lots
- Scrap metal and clean wood that can be recycled instead of landfilled
What the City Covers, and Where a Hauler Fits In
Star residents on Republic Services curbside service have real options before calling anyone. Bulky items like furniture and large appliances can be scheduled for pickup year-round for an additional fee, as long as they're set out and visible on your regular trash day. There are also two unlimited clean-up weeks each year, one in spring and one in winter, when bulky items and non-Freon appliances go out at no extra cost. Yard waste has its own system too, through a compost cart subscription with limited paper-bag overflow, plus seasonal leaf and Christmas tree drop-off behind City Hall.
Those programs work well if your timing lines up and your volume is reasonable. Where they start to fall short is scale and scheduling. A whole-house cleanout, a shed teardown, or a renovation pile doesn't fit neatly into a curbside pickup, and waiting for the next clean-up week isn't always realistic. Renting a dumpster is an option too, but if it sits in the street or on the sidewalk in the Ada County portion of town, it needs an ACHD right-of-way permit. A hauler who loads everything directly into a truck skips that step entirely.
If you'd rather haul it yourself, the Ada County Landfill at Hidden Hollow and the Meridian Transfer Station both take household junk, construction debris, yard waste and more. Just know tires and Freon appliances carry a disposal fee, loads need to be tarped or strapped down, and hazardous waste and out-of-county loads aren't accepted.
Star's growth means a lot of households here are dealing with move-in clutter, remodel debris or an acreage cleanout rather than decades of storage, and knowing which path, curbside, a clean-up week, or a hauler, fits your pile saves you a trip and some guesswork. If it's more than the city's programs can reasonably handle, Boise Junk Removal offers a free estimate to look at the job and tell you straight what it'll take to clear it out.
